Ponder a moment.

As i'm typing this entry, once again i'm clueless of what title should i put in.
As i'm typing this entry, i'm listening to Christian rock tunes on Launchcast.com and waiting for my class to start.
As i'm typing this blog, i have already watched MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA last night with Joanne Lee and Alex, handed in my proposal, and the tripmeter in the car is working again.
As i'm typing this blog, i'm reminded to meet up with Dr Prudence with Dewgem later, and catch a IMax movie with Mei after that.

I'm contented.

Wanted to write an entry about the CF meeting and Inter-faculty meeting on Wednesday, but my class will be starting soon. Looks like i have to leave it for another time lah. Hopefully, i can get it done by tonight.

And the Lunar New Year is coming. With the amount of vacant computers in the Internet lab, i guess many have started going back to their hometown. Looks like KL is going to be quiet for awhile.

OF cake, crowdiness and shooting one's own foot.

*As i'm sitting in this CC somewhere in Sri Petaling, I'm wondering how should i start off this entry, what title to put in, and when am i going to get the new computer.

The UTAR Christian Fellowship in PJ had its first meeting on Wednesday, 18th Jan. The event was Welcome Day, obviously to welcome the freshmen and new members into this wacky fellowship. Initially, some problems cropped up, one after another. To cut the long story short, we had Welcome Day unoffically. But despite all those problems, some goodness came about. We had an overwhelming response as more than 30 people turned up. Personally, i think it was an acheivement. But i hope we can still attract that many people in meetings to come. I don't want members registering, but ending up being sleeping members.

After a day of ice-breakers, games and makan, we bid farewell to the new members, and we had a committee meeting after CF. Interestingly, the some of the ex-committee members not only turned up for the event, but stayed back for the meeting as well. There were a lot of confusion, misunderstanding and disagreement going on (READ: war.) The whole situation was uptight that it was as if you were sweating in a sauna. The funny thing was one of the agruement led to the point where both fellows shot their own foot, which was hilarous and was clearly a breakdown in communication.

However, we managed to end the meeting by 7, prayed and forgave one another. Tension settled down after the meeting. I guess it's best to never bring your work/business into your friendship. It ruins those important relationship bridges that told a lot of time, effort and teh tarik to build. After all, it's best to bring any frustrations and problems before the committee during the meeting than while executing a plan.

Yesterday, i got this interesting forwarded e-mail from a friend:

Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God have to do this to me?" Here is a wonderful explanation!

A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away.
Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake."
"Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter."
"How about a couple raw eggs?" "Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mom, those are all yucky!"
To which the mother replies , "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!"
God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!
God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

Hmm... if we can tahan the hardship and circumstances thrown at us, we can enjoy the sweet, beautiful outcome twice as much. Is your day a piece of cake?

Friday the 13th, again!

Once again, i'm blogging about Friday the 13th. I may not like the number 13, but i'm indeed not triskaidekaphobiac, paraskavedekatriaphobiac or friggatriskaidekaphobiac.

ON that particular Friday last week, nothing terrible happened to me. I attended my tutorial classes, went for Youth Combined in the evening, tired scaring the daylights John Reuben before sending him, Jeremy, Adrian and Edwin home, and hitting the sack after reaching home. Now, it doesn't sound as horrifying has having the car batteries die on me as i'm typing this entry, waiting for Rowen to pick me from the campus. What got my spine chilling was what i watched Jamie's School Dinners.

I can't believe the kids in school would go for greasy, fast food rather than healthy food like girlled chicken with spices and pasta. And spicy chicken wrap; what's wrong with that? Apparently, the boy whom Jamie Oliver offered the wrap to dislike and hated it just at the sight of it. That was totally outragous! But you know what's more outragous than that? Kitchen ladies having no basics in cooking!

But then again, it reminded me about how was when i was a kid. I hate veggies, even now! But slowly, i'm learning to appreciate the taste and the properties it has. Now, i eat veggies on my own without being told to! Well, i guess we should appreciate what food we can eat, eh?

Imagine the horrors of not eating. Now, THAT's phobic.

Can you say "yummy?"

Crushed about Crushes.

"I was made for you, you were made for me
In this lonely world, we were meant to be in love
I will never forget that first moment we met
When two worlds, they crashed in
And I found my best friend"

Taken from Godsend, DC Talk

It's over. But it shouldn't it begin first before it could actually end?

Last year, i had a crush (or so i thought) on this pretty girl from another faculty. C (the girl) was sweet, graceful and playful lah. I like the way she looked, her smile and hair. It was through CF activities that i got to know her, and tried talking to her lah. While she celebrated her birthday not too long ago, i found out that C was younger than me, and i was right! She probably had the qualities i would want in a girlfriend, who would eventually be my wife. I head over heels for this girl then.

However, she has someone in her life that matters to her. At that instant of knowing that fact, i knew i had to stay a distance. I personally know that there isn't anything fun being the third person in a relationship. Therefore, it's best to just be friends. Just be platonic.

The way i discovered about it was rather unintelligent. Both C and i played the silent game, trying our best to keep quiet and not talk for as long as possible (which i won lah!) And during that game, i asked for her phone number by typing it on my handphone and showing it to her. She asked why, and i added in "to court you lah!"

Her answer was something like, " Yes and no. Yes, you can have my number, and no, because i have someone close to me." That was (at that time) a joykill.

Thinking back, it wasn't such an intelligent thing to do lah. But thinking back again, it was just a crush lah. It was the hormones running over time. Anyway, I would just like to be friends with her (and all the other girls) for the moment. NO boyfriend-girlfriend relationship for me now, girls!

Here's the list of stupid things i've done when i had a crush on a girl:

1. Shave my head. (Yes, this long-haired dude was once bald!)

I did it to impress a girl, E, who was then in church. Once during a mission trip the youth had, i thought she liked guys who had a shiny head, which later appeared to be faulty info. I was all head over heels about her, because of her sincerity and smile.

Interesting fact is that E was once out with my close buddies, Justin and Kevan. And this caused them to be as tight as enemies. Fortunately, all this is behind us now. Where she is now, no one has an idea. (If you're trying to figure out who she is, just stop. If you think you know who she is, keep that thought to yourself. IF you KNOW her, err... then GOOD for you!)

2. Those awkward words

I blurred out the words "I love you" as a way to end a call when i was out of words. Thinking back, it was a terrible way to end a phone call conversation. And it's still is. Almost all the librarians in my alma matar knew that i had a thing for SS, a librarian herself.

3. Cheap gifts ain't gifts at all!

Giving another librarian a small Pikachu toy without admitting it. I guess by now, LLm should know that that cheap toy is indeed from me! (and i learnt that cheap stuff isn't that impressive after all!)

Perhaps being in a relationship isn't something for me. I guess being single and available is the best option for me now. This status enables me to focus more on the important stuff, like my studies, relationship with God, family members and friends and things i can do while being single, like flirting and embarassing myself.

But i'm not implying that being in a relationship is bad. There are pros and cons of being single or attached. As long as you can maintain the relationship, accept the other for who she/he is and be yourself, it's ok.

Has my dream girl passed by me yet? Yeah, perhaps.
Has my other half passed by me yet? Probably not.

"You're beautiful it's true,
I saw you face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you."

Of simple living and PDAs

Until this day, i'm wondering on what kind of PDA (that's Personal Digital Assistant for you cave man) to use.

I'm currently using Justin's Sony Clie for the moment. The Clie PEG-SJ33 to be exact. Apparently, Sony has ceased the production of Clie, or so i heard. But it's ok for a newbie PDA user like me. I'm currently using it to store information, notes, reminders and listening to MP3s. Though, i'm still trying to adapt to its functions, i'm currently listening to a Naruto ending theme on it now. And listening to it and other MP3s in the PDA was what i was doing this week since it went cuckoo last week and all my other info got wiped out in the process.

And by the way, Justin was right. Between PocketPC and Palm OS, i definately say Palm is much simpler and straight forward in using it. So, i'm considering now to get one with Palm OS.

On Wednesday, Edwin took a look at the PDA. I thought him how to play Bejeweled while we were killing time. Instantly, he was hooked to it while we were at the Christian Fellowship booth in PA Block. And to my horror, he beat my high score! Talk about biting the hand that feeds!

Anyway, Edwin seems to be content with his handphone and of course, his laptop. He still owns a Nokia 6510, and don't have a complain about it. I think he mention something like, "if you have an advance color screen handphone, does that make you a more efficient handphone user than me?" or something along those lines.

And that make sense. I'm still happy with the mobile phone i have, even with the occasional hiccups. Let's list down the basic function of a handphone lah:

1. To receive/make phone calls
2. To receice/send messages via SMS

Then, there're freak addition to the handphone (freak as in unnecessary in marketing term lah). And apparently, there are among the must have spec before buying a handphone. Check it out:

3. Colour Screen
4. Radio/MP3 (used to listen to the radio on my handphone before my handset when haywire)
5. Truetones or MP3/Wav. file ringtones
6. Camera
7. Touch screen a.k.a. PDA funtionality

With the increase of technology in mobile phone and electronics, how can one not be affected by it? But i remember what my friend told me about PDAs, laptops, Internet and such devices. IF these technolgies are invented to save us time and energy, when is it that we're always rushing around with limited time in our hands?

Let's just reflect on that: Think of your grandparents time and now. Apparently, they don't have the computer, satelite TV or handphone. Yet, their life seems to be ok. But look at us; with all these gadgets, we seem to be always rushing for time, and have too much work to do. Funny, eh?

Till now, i'm still thinking of getting a PDA. It'll be my digital dictionary, bible, entertainer, etc in one device. So, could anyone give me a suggestion/advice on what to buy?

The Palm m105. My dad got this from a lucky draw (or was it for being the best agent of the year a few years back?) And when my dad handed me this old PDA a few days ago, i immediately thought of Tan Sri P.Ramlee. What does the two have in common? Black and white! (though technically, the screen is greenish)

That's just plain nostalgic! But it's a tragic that this PDA is non-color one.

The HP Ipaq PocketPC H1940. Recently, i lended this to Justin, and he seems to be happy with it. Only problem is that he took the cover off, and my dad wasn't thrilled finding out that it is in his hands. *sigh*

The Sony Clie PEG-SJ33 that i'm currently using. Cool, eh? So, what PDA should i get now?

Scammed by Loan?

Recently, i've received a few forwarded e-mails about how the government tries to "scam" graduates of both local and private universities with the loans provided to them. I am not in the group of undergraduates who applied and received aid from this loan to pay for my tuition fee, but it's interesting to know that there's a conspiracy going on.

Plus, my dad has been bugging me to get the loan, saying that it would help me secure a job in the future. But IHMO, i think my dad should be able to secure my financial needs while i'm studying here in UTAR. Anyway, here's the e-mail that has been circulating around the Net lately:

Hi,

I would like to express one issue that might to the concern of many local graduates in Malaysia.

I am a 2002 graduates from Multimedia University (MMU). I can further my studies there because I got a PTPTN loan from government. After working, I have started to pay back the loan. However, recently, I received a letter from PTPTN asking us to pay extra 4 to 5% of KOS PENTADBIRAN. Including the already charged 4% interest, I found that what we need to payback is much more than what we loaned. Most importantly, in the agreement that we signed of, there is no statement that we are charged of this so called KOS PENTADBIRAN. From the charges, it is very impossible for us to pay back as the loans is increasing while we are paying for it.

I feel very upset with government as this PTPTN does not really fulfill its role of helping poor students to futher studies but however it is actually torturing those who are poor as we need to pay much much more just to futher our studies. I do have a question for the government, if we are so rich, do we still need to get loan from government to futher our studies? To give a better idea, for a student to further their studies in prvate university, we are actualy paying the amount of a house for the fees.

Finally, I do hope government can have a look on this issue. I feel that the 4% interest is already a burden for us. If there is extra charges to us, it is not an amount that can be paid back by a graduates. Again, please think. Government tends to produce more potential graduates or more debtor. I believe PTPTN is helping students to futher studies but not scare them away.

p/s: Dear editor, I hope this can raise the concern of the relevant authority.

I bet after reading this forward, many students wil be furious, and wished they haven't at all thought of getting this loan in the first place.

But do think about it. This is an isolated case. So far, the only thing i've heard about on the news regarding this loan is either students misused the money given to the to purchase education-unrelated things or the hundreds of them not being able to repay the loan.

So, should i or should i not apply for the loan?

A long marathon: The beginning of a sophomore.

Running a marathon is a tricky thing. Not only do you need to endure a long duration of running and keep in mind that there are hundreds running side by side with you, but there's a finish line. Where there are those who are knocked out in the middle of the game, there are those who pass through the line proudly, although he/she may be in the hundred and twenty seventh place. But everything begins with the first step.

As of this semester, i'm a sophomore pursuing my degree in Journalism. And my last class for the week has just ended. This week was a wacky one lah.

Not only was it the first week of the semester for most of the students here in UTAR, but it was orientation week for the freshmen. And being the treasurer of the Telematch and Ice-breaking Committee, I was busy (and still am with the loads of receipts i have!) With last minute changes and improvisation on Wednesday (the event day) itself, we manage to control probably the largest crowd that had appeared for telematch. In my opinion, things went a little out of hand in order (Read: controlled chaos.) Now, i'm just waiting for the post-mortem meeting for it, hoping to receive good reports overall.

Studying again after slacking for more than three months during the semester break isn't easy. We need to re-tune ourselves on lectures and tutorial homeworks and focus now on what is important: getting better grades!

This week, i got to know most of my lecturers. I see some new faces and some familiar ones. This week, i got to meet again with my classmates whom most of them i haven't seen since last year! And i have Saturday classes (Ouch!) Boy, do I smell a challenge is coming as we enter the next week. I guess all of us need to pick up our pace in studying.

I really need to stay alert and be more hardworking this time around. Slacking time is over, and there is work to be done.

Afterall, to walk a good marathon is to complete it, no matter how slow you maybe.

Mobile phone risk.

It's not a surprise lah.

Ever since handphone have been increasingly popular nowadays, it's not uncommon that using it too often can somewhat damage your brain or cause cancer.

I recently received this e-mail, and in the picture, it's stated how the radiation from the handphone (which is fairly very, very low) can cook your brain like a mircowave oven.

What's more interesting what the statements attached with this picture in the forwarded e-mail sent to me. It said "Talk less on mobile phone" and had this shaky advise:

"Please use left ear while using cell (mobile), because if you use the right one it will affect brain directly. This is a true fact from Appollo medical team."

How true this advise is? I have no idea. But in order to findout the reliablility of it, get two friends to carry out this theory:
Ask one of them (Subject A) to use the handphone with the right ear, while the other (Subject B) with left ear. You yourself can participate by being the control sample of the experiment (use loudspeak mode or hands-free set.) Then, see who kicks the bucket first. (The trick here is that it may take years or even decades, but it's enough to fuel curiousity, eh?)

So, if you discover that:

a. Subject A goes off first, theory's definately right!

b. Subject B goes off first, theory has been disproven!

c. All three subjects A, B and C develops cancer and dies, handphone is bad for health!

Though there are many variables to be taken into account, it doesn't really matter. The straight forward point is too much of something is bad for your health, even water and soya bean milk.

So, i guess the safe thing to do is to either just send sms, speak over the conventional house telephone, chat online or send e-mails to one another. But then again, i heard of a rumour that over exposure to the computer monitor bleeds your eyes away....

PS: Good news for non-blogger.com members! Since i can now moderate the comments, anyone can just leave a comment in my entries, provided it ain't spam.
