FANSUBS

This is taken and translated from the article “FANSUB & DOUJINSHI: SUATU ALTERNATIVE”, of STARZ, issue 7. but I’m just gonna elaborate about what fansub is all about!

So, what are FANSUBS? They are artworks of animations like films, TV series and OVA (Original Video Animation) that has been translated by a third party/ fansubbers (mostly dobe by fans themselves). The reason being is to privately distribute copies of the animes to other anime fans.

There are several reasons that push these fansubbers to do these translations despite the existence of several companies having the license to do so:
1. Many domestically distributors like ADV Films, Bandai Entertainment/Animego takes too much time translating and distributing them to the public.

2. The undying love of the fansubbers towards their animes. There are fanatic fansubbers that love the animes so much that they feel it is their responsibility to translate the animes to be shared to other fans. As they say, spread the love!

3. Anime fans are hyped about the quality of translation or poor subtitles produced by domestic companies.

Among the animes translated are:
Tenjo Tenge
Samurai Champloo
Samurai 7

The pros and cons of fansubs

Among the cons of fansubs is that it ruins the sales of the original animes. This happens due to the fact that the fansubs have long draw the attention of fans and they do offer animes at original quality at cheaper prices.

The good side of fansubs is; first of all, the fact that the fansubs community are online, the animes are indirectly promote the animes that are already on sale to other fans in the world. Among the animes are NARUTO & FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST.

Besides that, it has become an online reference for the fans.

Thirdly, it has become a place for fans to interact and exchange ideas about their favorite animes.

Rising issues

Fansubs is in fact a crime since it is considered violating the copyright law. Therefore, there are policies that protect the anime from being printed or duplicated in any other form, including the translation of it. However, these laws can’t stop these fansubs from continuing their translating.

Among popular fansubs websites are:
http://www.animesuki.com/
http://www.anbudom.com/

Finally, I’ve discovered what fansubs are. And knowing is half the battle. Broaden your horizons yet? I surely have!
